ACYP has heard from children and young people from across the Greater Sydney regions in the following face-to-face consultations.


The Strategic Plan

Over 4,000 children and young people engaged in face-to-face consultations to inform the themes and direction of the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. These consultations included children and young people from schools and youth organisations across the Greater Sydney region. These voices informed the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People.


Homelessness

Children and young people have raised the issue of youth homelessness across a range of ACYP consultations; including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as with children and young people in juvenile detention and with socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 60 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to share their experiences of homelessness. These consultations included children and young people from 5 schools and youth organisations across the Greater Sydney region.

Their voices informed the development of a report that focuses on what children and young people experiencing homelessness have to say.

A further 38 children and young were involved in consultations that led to the creation of a play to raise awareness of youth homelessness called ‘Follow Me Home’ by the Australian Theatre for Young People. Childhood Obesity – Citizen’s Jury

A total of 130 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to discuss childhood obesity, specifically on whether sugary drinks should be banned in schools and sporting venues. These consultations included children and young people from across the Greater Sydney Region.

Their feedback informed the development of a report that was produced for the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Health & wellbeing


Community Inclusion

ACYP undertook consultations with 100 children and young people across NSW to hear from them what makes them feel welcome and unwelcome in their communities. These consultations included children and young people from 4 schools across the Greater Sydney region.


Violence against children and young people

In ACYP’s consultations with over 30,000 children and young people across NSW, violence continues to be raised. The issue has come up in consultations with children and young people experiencing homelessness; in juvenile detention and other socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 202 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to discuss what violence means to them; the locations where violence happens to children and young people and what they think should happen in their communities to end violence against children and young people.

These consultations included children and young people from 6 schools across the Greater Sydney Region. An online poll of 1,000 children and young people was also conducted; and included children and young people residing in Greater Sydney. Their voices informed the development of a report which focuses on what children and young people had to say about violence.

NSW Education Standards Authority Minimum Standards

A total of 154 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations undertaken by ACYP for the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). These consultations included participants from 4 schools across the Greater Sydney region. Their feedback on the HSC Minimum Standards informed the development of a report that was produced for NESA.

The future of education

Education has been a dominant issue raised by children and young people across all ACYP consultations. During consultations for the development of the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People, education was the number one area raised as working well and not working well for children and young people.

A total of 1,848 children and young people took part in face-to-face consultations, an online survey and polling to provide their views on what education in the 21st Century should look like. This included 230 children and young people from across the State, including the Greater Sydney region, aged between 12 and 24 years, who took part in the face-to-face focus group style consultations.

A total of 184 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to inform the NSW Department of Education review of the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. These consultations included children and young people from the Greater Sydney region.


Bullying

Bullying has been a major concern raised by children and young people across all ACYP consultations, beginning with the consultations for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. To investigate this more deeply, ACYP conducted face-to-face consultations with 157 children and young people in schools and youth organisations.

These consultations included children and young people from multiple schools and youth organisations across the Greater Sydney Region. Findings were confirmed through an online poll of 1,000 children and young people across NSW. This feedback informed the development of a report that focused on bullying and children and young people’s recommendations for this issue. Download the report via the link below.

Juvenile Justice

Children and young people have spoken about their experiences of the juvenile justice system across a range of ACYP consultations including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as consultations with children and young people experiencing homelessness, consultations with children and young with experiences living in out of home care (OOHC), consultations with children and young people about their experiences of violence, and with socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 260 children and young people in juvenile justice centres participated in face-to-face consultations. These consultations included listening to young people two Juvenile Justice Centres in the Greater Sydney Region, however there were young people from Greater Sydney Region in all Centres we visited.

This feedback informed a report which focused on what children and young people in Juvenile Justice Centres have to say.

Greater Sydney Commission

A total of 295 children and young people, from 10 schools across the Greater Sydney region, participated in face-to-face consultations undertaken by ACYP for the Greater Sydney Commission. Their voices informed the development of a report that was produced for the Greater Sydney Commission.


Mental Health

Children and young people have spoken about their mental health experiences across a range of ACYP consultations starting with those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. In these consultations with more than 4,000 children and young people, mental health awareness and support was raised as one of the most important issues affecting children and young people in NSW.

Following the launch of the Plan, a total of 342 children and young people participated in targeted face-to-face consultations undertaken by ACYP to discuss what is and is not working in relation to mental health and wellbeing for children and young people. These consultations included children and young people from in the Greater Sydney region.

Child Safety

A total of 608 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to share their views on creating child safe organisations. These consultations included children and young people from across 5 schools in the Greater Sydney Region as well as a consultation with the NSW Youth Advisory Council.

Out of Home Care

Children and young people have spoken about their experiences of the out of home care (OOHC) system across a range of ACYP consultations including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as consultations children and young people experiencing homelessness, consultations in juvenile detention, consultations with children and young people about their experiences of violence, and with socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 39 children and young people in out of home care participated in targeted face-to-face consultations to discuss their experiences. These consultations were part of the ACWA Conference and young people presented their feedback to the adults at the event. These consultations included children and young people from all across NSW.
