Children and young people in the Hunter region participated in face-to-face consultations with ACYP to share their views and recommendations across many topics. Information on these consultations can be found below.


Consultations in Regional NSW

In all ACYP consultations, at least 40% of children and young people that participate live in regional NSW. ACYP has heard back from children and young people across all regions, including those living in the Hunter. ACYP has produced a report of the views and experiences of more than 4,000 children and young people living in regional NSW.


The Strategic Plan

Over 4,000 children and young people engaged in face-to-face consultations to inform the themes and direction of the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. These consultations included children and young people from 3 schools in the Hunter region. These voices informed the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People.


Childhood Obesity – Citizen’s Jury

A total of 130 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to discuss childhood obesity, specifically on whether sugary drinks should be banned in schools and sporting venues. These consultations included children and young people in the Hunter region. Their feedback informed the development of a report that was produced for the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

A total of 176 children and young people who are refugees or asylum seekers participated in face-to-face consultations to share their experiences. These consultations included children and young people living in the Hunter region. Their feedback on their experiences informed the development of a report.

Child Safe

A total of 608 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to share their views on creating child safe organisations. These consultations included children and young people from 3 schools in the Hunter region.

Out of Home Care

Children and young people have spoken about their experiences of the out of home care (OOHC) system across a range of ACYP consultations including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as consultations children and young people experiencing homelessness, consultations in juvenile detention, consultations with children and young people about their experiences of violence, and with socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 39 children and young people in out of home care, including young people from the Hunter region, participated in targeted face-to-face consultations to discuss their experiences. These consultations were part of the ACWA Conference and young people presented their feedback to the adults at the event. These consultations included children and young people from all across NSW.
