Children and young people in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven have participated in the following ACYP face-to-face consultations.


Consultations in Regional NSW

In all ACYP consultations, at least 40% of children and young people that participate live in regional NSW. ACYP has heard back from children and young people across all regions, including those living in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven. ACYP has produced a report of the views and experiences of more than 4,000 children and young people living in regional NSW.


The Strategic Plan

Over 4,000 children and young people engaged in face-to-face consultations to inform the themes and direction of the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. These consultations included children and young people from 8 schools and youth organisations across the Illawarra-Shoalhaven. These voices informed the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People.


Homelessness

Children and young people have raised the issue of youth homelessness across a range of ACYP consultations; including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as with children and young people in juvenile detention and with socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 60 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to share their experiences of homelessness. These consultations included children and young people in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region. Their voices informed the development of a report that focuses on what children and young people experiencing homelessness have to say.

A further 38 children and young were involved in consultations that led to the creation of a play to raise awareness of youth homelessness, ‘Follow Me Home’ by ATYP. This consultation included children and young people from the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region.

Childhood Obesity – Citizen’s Jury

A total of 130 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to discuss childhood obesity, specifically on whether sugary drinks should be banned in schools and sporting venues. These consultations included children and young people in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region. Their feedback informed the development of a report that was produced for the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

NSW Education Standards Authority Minimum Standards

A total of 154 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations undertaken by ACYP for the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). These consultations included young people from 3 schools across the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region. Their feedback on the HSC Minimum Standards informed the development of a report which was produced for NESA.

A total of 176 children and young people who are refugees or asylum seekers participated in face-to-face consultations to share their experiences. These consultations included children and young people living in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region. Their feedback on their experiences informed the development of a report.
