Juvenile Justice

Children and young people have spoken about their experiences of the juvenile justice system across a range of ACYP consultations including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as consultations with children and young people experiencing homelessness, consultations with children and young with experiences living in out of home care (OOHC), consultations with children and young people about violence, and with socially excluded children and young people.

Additionally, ACYP has conducted targeted consultations with children and young people in all six Juvenile Justice Centres in NSW. Between May 2015 and July 2019 ACYP listened to 260 children and young people in Juvenile Justice Centre’s aged 11-21 years in a number of focus groups and a project piloting two rounds of individual Exit Interviews with 15 young people.

Young people participating in these consultations were asked what services and supports are helpful to young people in the community to help them stay out of trouble, through their time in custody, as well as when returning to the community after release.
