Violence

When the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People was being developed, ACYP asked children and young people ‘what’s not working well for children and young people in your community?’ In their answers, children and young people frequently mentioned violence.

In ACYP’s consultations with over 30,000 children and young people across NSW, violence continues to be raised. The issue has come up in consultations with children and young people living in regional NSW, with those experiencing homelessness; in juvenile detention and other socially excluded children and young people.

ACYP has also undertaken targeted focus group consultations with 202 children and young people to hear from them what violence means to them, the locations where violence happens to children and young people and what they think should happen in their communities to stop violence against children and young people. These consultations were conducted in schools across NSW including Greater Sydney, Central Coast and Central West and Orana.

These same questions were also asked in an online poll of 1,000 children and young people. ACYP brought back 100 children and young people that had participated in the focus group consultations at a one-day international conference on ending violence against children and young people. Delegates heard what is being done globally to end violence against children and further developed their own solutions.
