Children and young people living in the Central Coast have participated in the following ACYP face-to-face consultations.


Consultations in Regional NSW

In all ACYP consultations, at least 40% of children and young people that participate live in regional NSW. ACYP has heard back from children and young people across all regions, including those living on the Central Coast. ACYP has produced a report of the views and experiences of more than 4,000 children and young people living in regional NSW.


The Strategic Plan

Over 4,000 children and young people engaged in face-to-face consultations to inform the themes and direction of the NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. These consultations included children and young people from 5 schools and youth organisations from across the Central Coast region.


Homelessness

Children and young people have raised the issue of youth homelessness across a range of ACYP consultations; including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as with children and young people in juvenile detention and with socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 60 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to share their experiences of homelessness. These consultations included children and young people from 2 youth services in the Central Coast region.

Their voices informed the development of a report that focuses on what children and young people experiencing homelessness have to say.

A further 38 children and young were involved in consultations that led to the creation of a play to raise awareness of youth homelessness, ‘Follow Me Home’ by ATYP. This consultation included children and young people from the Central Coast region.

Childhood Obesity – Citizen’s Jury

A total of 130 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to discuss childhood obesity, specifically on whether sugary drinks should be banned in schools and sporting venues. These consultations included children and young people in the Central Coast region. Their feedback informed the development of a report that was produced for the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Mental Health

Children and young people have spoken about their mental health experiences across a range of ACYP consultations starting with those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. In these consultations with more than 4,000 children and young people, mental health awareness and support was raised as one of the most important issues affecting children and young people in NSW.

Following the launch of the Plan, a total of 342 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations undertaken by ACYP to discuss what is and is not working in relation to mental health and wellbeing for children and young people. These consultations included children and young people on the Central Coast. Their feedback informed the development of a report.

Central Coast Service Reform

A total of 158 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to discuss living in the Wyong area. These consultations included children and young people from 8 schools and youth centres across the Central Coast region. Their feedback informed ACYP’s projects and reports.


Violence against children and young people

In ACYP’s consultations with over 30,000 children and young people across NSW, violence continues to be raised. The issue has come up in consultations with children and young people experiencing homelessness; in juvenile detention and other socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 202 children and young people participated in face-to-face consultations to discuss what violence means to them; the locations where violence happens to children and young people and what they think should happen in their communities to end violence against children and young people. These consultations included children and young people in the Central Coast region. Their voices informed the development of a report that focuses on what children and young people had to say about ending violence.

Bullying

Bullying has been a major concern raised by children and young people across all ACYP consultations, beginning with the consultations for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People. To investigate this more deeply, ACYP conducted face-to-face consultations with 157 children and young people in schools and youth organisations.

These consultations included children and young people living in the Central Coast. Findings were confirmed through an online poll of 1,000 children and young people across NSW. This feedback informed the development of a report that focused on bullying and children and young people’s recommendations for this issue. Download the report via the link below.

Juvenile Justice

Children and young people have spoken about their experiences of the juvenile system across a range of ACYP consultations including those conducted for the Strategic Plan for Children and Young People; as well as consultations with children and young people experiencing homelessness, consultations with children and young with experiences living in out of home care (OOHC), consultations with children and young people about their experiences of violence, and with socially excluded children and young people.

A total of 260 children and young people in juvenile justice centres participated in face-to-face consultations. These consultations included children and young people in the Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre, Central Coast. This feedback informed a report that focused on what children and young people in Juvenile Justice Centres have to say.
