Submission on improving rental laws in New South Wales

In 2023, the Department of Customer Service’s Real Estate and Housing Policy Team sought feedback to  to improve rental laws to support renters, landlords and the community. Better rules for rentals will help give more stability for renters and certainty for landlords.

On 24 October 2024, NSW Parliament passed the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill 2024 that proposed:

  • ending ‘no grounds’ evictions for fixed term and periodic leases
  • making it easier for renters to keep pets
  • limiting how often rent can be increased for all rental agreements
  • clarifying that renters cannot be asked to pay for background checks
  • ensuring renters have a free and convenient way to pay rent.

ACYP made a written submission in August 2023.
