Speak for Yourself - Participation Charter

We, the young people, agree that the key principles for meaningful participation of children and young people in decision-making include the following:

  • respect
  • empowerment
  • giving and receiving constructive advice
  • trust
  • providing feedback
  • interaction and entertainment
  • no stereotyping of young people
  • equity
  • collaboration

We respectfully request that adults assist us to make a meaningful contribution by:

  • providing guidance balance with independence
  • providing training and skill development
  • providing resources and financial support
  • understand that we have many commitments
  • Encouraging us to work collaboratively
  • Fully inform us of our role and our rights in the decision making process

We recommend that children and young people engaged in decision making processes undertake the following:

  • respect the views of others
  • be fully committed to the process
  • take accountability
  • show initiative
  • respect boundaries
  • be flexible with their time
  • meet deadlines
