About ACYP

The Advocate for Children and Young People is responsible, under legislation, for developing the three-year whole-of-government strategic plan. Initial consultation on the plan will involve talking to children and young people across NSW to find out what are the issues of most concern to them, and talking to the government and non-government agencies whose work impacts on young people. Participating in this consultation will give children and young people the chance to have their say about what the plan should cover in the interests of children and young people in NSW today, and in the future.

In module 1 you will become familiar with:

• the role and function of the Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People, also know as ACYP.
• how ACYP works.
• the focus of ACYP on involving children and young people in decision making that affects their lives
• the work of ACYP in listening to the most vulnerable children and young people across NSW.

General principles in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

In module 3 you will become familiar with:

• the four principles that encompass the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
• a Child Rights Approach vs a Needs Approach
• our responsibility as Duty Bearers
• other Articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Child Rights in Practice

In this module you will become familiar with:

• the definition of a child rights approach
• the key components of a child rights approach
• how to apply a child rights approach to your work.
